Fifty five (55) year old from central Indiana. My love of fireworks started in the late 60s. Father was an attorney for a small town and sonehow managed to get a license to shoot fireworks. Back the and even thru the 70s the most you could buy as a consumer was smoke bombs, snakes and sparklers. I remember our basement filling up with boxes of Chinese writing on them and me asking about them. What turned out to be a family get together became a neighborhood party for many of July 4ths. Moms favorite was the buzz bomb, Dad's was a quarter pound rocket while mine were mortars. The tubes were made of metal and I remember digging the holes to bury them in the ground, leaving about 1 inch above ground. They were probbaly 1.0".
