All in all I was very happy with the result of the show. All but 1 16 shot 200g cake and 1 ball shell didn’t fire and apparently a fuse slowed down in one of the cakes as there is a rouge shot after the show ends. I had 2 Firelinx firing modules connected to 48 pins. I counted something like 700 shots in total for the 7 min show. It wasn’t without some issues but nothing that couldn’t be resolved. So here’s what went down.

I had everything wired up by 4:30pm. Did a continuity test on Firelinx Mod 1 and it came back with all positive results. Tested Mod 2 and it showed all 24 pins in the script but was not recognizing a shot loaded (MJG initiator) in any of them. So I start scratching my head because I have been testing this script with both mods A LOT to make sure it would go smooth. I pretty much went through everything possible but could not figure out why I was seeing this. In the Firelinx manual it says when you get an X on a pin when doing a CT test it means “There is no shot loaded, but this channel is currently in the choreography. This should be corrected; a show will still run if it is left disconnected”.

Since I still had a few hours before the show I decided to take a break and go pickup my wife for the party which is only a 10 min ride away. During that trip I called Firelinx even thought I know it was Sunday July 3rd and left a message on their voicemail asking for someone to call me. When I got back to the shoot site I noticed I had a voicemail from Andrea at Firelinx letting me know someone will be calling me. While listening to that message Cory from Firelinx called and I explained to him what I was seeing. After some discussion we figured the system wasn’t reporting those 24 pins correctly doing the CT test but I knew the connections were good and so were the initiators. Cory assured me that if my connections and initiators are good then the show will shoot as scripted. That was all I needed to hear to relax and not continue to think the show was going to be a disaster.

I want to give a big shout out to the crew at Firelinx for calling me back within 15 mins of getting my message and helping me on the busiest weekend for pyros across the USA.

After I hung up with Cory I was feeling good about everything but then we realized we had a new issue to figure out. Since we were planning on floating a dock out in the middle of the river, we had put an anchor downstream the night before and tested letting the dock float out there. The test was good. The dock just weather veined in the tide that was going upstream and didn’t spin at all. NOW we are seeing that the wind was ripping pretty good downstream and now we had an issue with the dock possibly spinning if the wind continued. The boat we used to prep all that is lighter than the dock so we idled to see if the wind would blows us downstream. It was a little but was more like a slack tide effect which also isn’t good for keeping the dock from spinning. So we ended up putting a second anchor upstream and connected the anchors to both up and down stream sides of the dock which worked out fine. But we spent a bit of time doing that and now it’s dark and pretty much right at shoot time.

Due to trying to solve that problem I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of everything setup after I took the tarps off. I only have a picture of the products before we brought them down to the dock earlier in the day. Hopefully someone at some point took that shot and eventually I’ll have it to upload.

Now it’s time to shoot and I use a laptop to play the music as I don’t have that synced up with the Firelinx yet being I’m just using the internal clock for script firing. But it’s easy enough to click play and hit the fire button on the control module at the same time. SOOO I do it and immediately see my laptop take 1 full second before it responds to my click. I have 5 seconds of empty space before the show and know before the first shot fires the entire script is 1 second off time. After the show I told a few people and they laughed at me. Joked that I cared about it being 1 second off. They didn’t know it was… but I did, and so will you even if I didn’t mention that. LOL. I’ll be figuring out SMTP for next year.

Finally I find out that the person who was tasked to film the show from the best vantage point so that all the breaks are in frame, FAILED to even hit the record button on his camera. There were a lot of people filming it but they were all close to the show so there’s a lot that’s not in frame. However between my wife and my sister in law they both got ok video so I edited the better views from their phones to make the video I’m posting. I also setup my camera pointing at the dock so I added that video to the lower corner as well. I really like the Firelinx illumination telling you what mode it’s in. Watching it change from green (safe) to red (armed) is pretty satisfying to see just before the show starts. I also heard a few people mention that “those things turned red so I think the show is starting”.

I also want to give a shout out to everyone here on pyrotalk that takes the time to read and comment on each other’s posts. It really does help a lot to have a community to discuss all things pyro and to be able to find answers and support from pyro peers.

2, 12 shot racks are not in this picture.

Great show!

I think the video turned out great. The little one clapping was an awesome moment. That’s when you know it was a success.

Awesome show. Great music choices,, love the pic in pic of the shoot site,, funny took me a minute to realize the glittery stuff around it was a reflection on the water… I had a slightly similar issue with one cue not registering,, finally I said screw it, it’s only strobes,, but they went off

Great show man! I know you didn't want that straggler at the end but I liked it lol.

Looks great!
My video didn't turn out this year. My drone died halfway through, and my dad was operating it, and for some reason there was an airport warning that we couldn't go over 100ft. Which I've never had before at my house. So I got half the show but most of it was too low. My stationary camera that I operate had the perfect angle, but the ISO was WAY Too low. It was also the WORST conditions for filming. 78% humidity and ZERO Wind. So.... Smoke-fest. My 45 second gold Nishiki Willow finale is completely blurred out by the smoke and dark. Those don't film well in good conditions. However, I had several people tell me that my show was better than Disney! HAHA Kids who had JUST been on vacation to Disney were telling their parents that this was better. That's the HIGHEST compliment I can ever get!

Everything looks great! I'll be posting more soon. My laptop is not getting any power so need to figure out if its power cable issue or the psu is broken on the laptop itself. For now all i have is my phone.

Thanks everyone. I'm really enjoying watching everyone's shows.

Funny that while watching the Macys NYC fireworks I thought they were cool but enjoy our shows here more because we are just backyard guys and gals doing mini versions of pro shows! :p

Like Dave often says, the backyard hobbyist are progressing very quickly.

None of the town shows ever shoot to music but that could be changing with the advancements the backyard peeps are taking advantage of.

Thanks, that's my nephew he's 16 months old. My brother wanted to see how he would handle his first firework show. He apparently loved it.

Also love your crowd. They were fired up!

Nice job on this, you have some scripting skills!

Finally got to watch you show properly on my laptop. Again, great show and choice of music. Best of all it seems to match your concept video pretty closely which is a testament to the planning you put in. Looking forward to seeing where you go from here!

Thanks Kev, it was pretty close.

Thanks Jay. It's the result of the main video not being recorded but it's not as bad a previous years. lol

Fun show, loved the shot of the baby getting into it.

Thanks, yea I turned the kids dad into a pyro so we will be hand lighting some stuff for the kid on the next visit.

Quick update: Firelinx emailed me the next day that they shipped out a new firing module. I received it and will be returning the one that seemed to have issues. I'm curious to learn what they find out about the issue.
Anyway kudos to Firelinx for the support.

good day.

HA I feel ya on the flashbacks. Three days would be awesome. I actually tried to script Porno for Pyros but I couldn't get it the way I wanted it to look with the limited cues I have available. There are a lot of great Janes Addiction songs that can be used for shows. Next year I'm going to due cuts of a number of songs so it's not just 2 songs.

Feel ya on the P4P. I tried once and was like nope....this would burn my budget to do it right. Pretty much have my songs for next year set assuming I can get the AOP I need. Already have 2/3 of it scripted. Just need to replace one song because I used it this year.

Very cool show!! I am so envious of you guys that can shoot on or near the water. I think the reflection of the fireworks off the water adds such a cool effect to the show.

Very much loved seeing the small kids enjoying the pyro with their parents. Very cool. Looks like you had a nice crowd, and the pyro choices were superb!

Great job!!

Thanks Rick. I'd say we had close to 100 people this year spread over 3 side by side properties all throwing a party on the same night. Usually I pick the fireworks and they pay for them. I usually just supply the initiators but this year I threw some money into the product.

Floating this dock in the river with anchors to keep it in the correct position was a PITA. The years prior it would stay connect to the gang plank but it was way to close to the audience for my liking. This year I told the guys throwing the party we need to float this thing so figure out how to do it. Although a PITA it worked out well so we will figure out a better way to deal with that next year.

I rather have the big open spaces that some of you guys have instead of messing with floating docks and ISH. LOL

I've been meaning to say that I'm not so sure dealing with that dock is all that much easier then what I deal with getting to my site. At least once I'm down at my site setup is somewhat normal. The thought of also putting my show out on docks in the water so the audience can stay on shore just adds the workload and creates more problems. Hopefully things go smoother next year after this first learning year floating the dock out.

Yea I would have to agree with that after seeing your setup video. lol There is also a bit of fear when you got $1,000+ worth of equipment sitting on a floating platform in a river. However I rather deal with that loss than the show being to close to the crowd and something goes wrong.

Nice show Gene. I like the still shots of people watching the show. That’s something I have very little documentation of but need to put some effort into.

I’d have a hard time putting my equipment and product on a raft out in the current! I think I’d try and have some custom fit life vests for my modules!

I know what you mean about all that money tied up on a platform... My buddy has lost probably a half dozen 18M's on his pontoon boat platforms the past 5 years. He has tried everything from the boots to concrete board dividers to protect them. But it doesn't matter. He lost two more this year. He has an investor that gives him half the money he spends on his show ($10K this year) so I'm sure he takes it out of there. I don't know if I'd keep doing it. But I do love the look of fireworks over water. Definitely amplifies the effects.

Those shots came from one of the guests. I'm lucky she sent them to me. I wouldn't have thought to get those shots. They do look cool.

LOL I like the life vest idea.
