Fireworks and firecrackers are normally set off at the stroke of midnight to bring in the new year and drive away any potential misfortune.

Some families ignite firecrackers on Chinese New Year's Day morning when they open the door or before they go out, to bring good luck through the year.

Many people do not immediately clear up the mess left after the firecrackers go off because there is a superstition that this would be sweeping away their good fortune and wealth. Cleaning and throwing out rubbish are among the many things that are taboo on the first day of Chinese New Year.

The use of fireworks and firecrackers has its origins in Chinese legend, which tells of a monster called Nian that would come out on New Year's Eve to devour villagers and destroy their homes.

Everyone would hide in their houses, terrified of the creature, but one boy was brave enough to scare it away using loud bangs from bamboo he had thrown on a fire, which is the origin of firecrackers.

The next day, people did this again to celebrate the banishment of the demon.
