I love this idea! It actually gives people a chance at a friendly competition. You also are limited so you can only put so much on the board. Such a good idea!

Great idea but you need some basic rules... efire vs one fuse isn't fair so I would recommend 2 divisions.

Anything goes? I was hoping for more rules or a couple of different categories. But it's all for fun so no biggie. I would assume this gives a bigger advantage to those that can efire or can shoot 1.3.

Only 2 categories one fuse and efired. As far as 1.3 goes idk. If you want to bury the board with a 12in mortar on top so be it. Lol If this is enjoyable for everyone maybe in the future we can do something different. By the competition video you can probably tell I'm not very computer savvy, so this is the setup for this year. Hope you join

I think the rules are good enough for a friendly contest like this. We can see how it goes and rules can be adjusted, if needed, should we do this again. Wish I had a stash of AP because it's just not practical placing an order for this considering minimums and shipping costs. Besides maybe limiting or categorizing different product in the future, I would suggest limiting camera angles (e.g. one or two fixed cameras) as it could turn into a contest of who can make the best video. But it is what it is. Overall I think this is a great idea. Limiting it to a 2x4 board is a good idea because it's not like it will be a huge investment in time and money. It's going to get me shooting for NYE when I was on the fence about it.

Might be fun to do a one board daytime firework contest sometime.

I assume not but want to confirm, if e-fireing, the mods do not have to be on the board?

Good question, no the mods do not need to be on the board just the pyro. BTW grand prize dollar amount has grown to $125 plus the Wfboom prize package!

Great idea and thanks for throwing this out there. I recently had some discussion about doing this in an upcoming shoot. Maybe I'll throw something in this friendly NYE competition.

One thought on "voting".... The PyroTalk forum allows polls. Currently the limit is 10 options (maybe Dave has the ability to waive that limit), but if there are less than 10 submittals in each category, it might be easy to just do a poll, rather than trying to manage the "voting" in youtube comments. It also might minimize the voting just being a popularity contest by rallying everyone's friends to vote on YouTube. Either way - it's all for fun and look forward to seeing some of the videos.

Thanks!

Here is my entry. This was a lot of fun, and certainly a challenge! I was seriously measuring fuses down to the inch to get the timing. I mis-timed the finale, but it ended up producing a nice unintended false finale after all.

Here's a video of my board. I didn't get measurements but it was a pre-cut 2x4 piece of OSB purchased at Home Depot.

https://youtu.be/eJNGgNkqB_c

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eJNGgNkqB_c&feature=youtu.be

My wife was suppose to video the show for me but apparently forgot to hit record on her phone. My niece has a video of the show and I hope to have that today and edited tomorrow. I'm not sure how that came out. She had started celebrating early

I didn't get a picture or video of the board after the show. I checked to make sure everything fired etc (it did) and grabbed my mod. I planned to go back out and get a picture of the board but got my NYE on and forgot. I was planned on getting a picture before disassembly but my brother thought he was doing me a favor and started cleaning up and breaking down the board for me. All good. I did it for the fun and the experience and not the competition.

Lessons learned:

Building a board may make setup faster but having to lug a board full of cakes around by yourself is a back breaker
Don't count on others to get good videos
Fireworks are always more impressive in person than in demo videos, especially when shooting multiples (seem to never learn this lesson)
Don't plan on shooting a NYE show at midnight (watching the ball drop in NYC on TV is a tradition that will not be replaced by fireworks, at least for my audience)
Even when scripting a show, especially a short one, it's hard to enjoy it as it's happening with everything else your paying attention to
Don't let your audience watch a KISS concert that broke the record for the biggest firework show during a rock concert before your backyard display :o Just kidding!

Lessons learned:

1) Building a board may make setup faster but having to lug a board full of cakes around by yourself is a back breaker
2) Don't count on others to get good videos
3) Fireworks are always more impressive in person than in demo videos, especially when shooting multiples (seem to never learn this lesson)
4) Don't plan on shooting a NYE show at midnight (watching the ball drop in NYC on TV is a tradition that will not be replaced by fireworks, at least for my audience)

I liked the lessons learned summary.

1) This past year, I built a bunch of 22" by 6ft boards on 2x2 frames (The size easily allows two to fit side by side in a short bed to drive out into the field), they were a huge aid in two of the last shows.

2) Agree on the cameras. As I've "invested" in firing equipment, I've invested in "reasonable" cameras to capture the moment. I usually have a couple gopros on tri-pods. But even then there may be issues (One did not get turned on for NYE and one drooped when it got wet - the begining of my video may be a bit odd)

3) Yes, Multiples and Layers.

4) TOTALLY. This year the fireworks was delayed for my son's Diet Coke and Mentos extravaganza at midnight

5) Another reason for cameras on tripods.

6) We didn't watch it... Yet.

I did just watch your show. I like the crossettes at the beginning, the audio selection went very well with it, was it scripted to the audio?

I did just watch your show. I like the crossettes at the beginning, the audio selection went very well with it, was it scripted to the audio?

It was scripted. Below is the concept video I made of the show and the script:

https://youtu.be/_H29iwFTv60

#Event Time #Channel #Cue #Firework Name
00:00.00s 1 1 Escape Velocity
00:12.41s 1 2 Criss Cross
00:12.41s 1 3 Criss Cross
00:33.81s 1 4 Generic - Consumer Fan Slice
00:35.38s 1 5 Criss Cross
00:35.38s 1 6 Criss Cross
00:37.61s 1 7 Deep Impact
00:41.01s 1 8 Generic - Consumer Fan Slice
00:45.94s 1 9 Generic - Consumer Fan Slice
00:51.35s 1 10 Generic - Consumer Fan Slice
00:57.92s 1 11 Generic - Consumer Fan Slice
00:59.59s 1 12 Black Thunder
01:10.00s 1 13 Black Thunder x2
01:24.51s 1 14 Shell Rack
END

"Generic - Consumer Fan Slice" in this case was S.A.M. by Pyro Nation. I often fire each row in a fan cake separately and have created this entry in CSC for easy scripting of these types of cakes.

The crossettes were also a test run for my next 4th show. I'm using the same cakes in that show too.

Glad you liked it. Both the video and the show came out better than I initially thought. I wish I had video of both the board and from the further away viewing area. Two shells flower potted and that first one got me watching the board more than the show. I couldn't find any damage to the cakes or any tubes though. I'm certain the first was in the Phantom Deep impact 9 shot 500g cake and the second was either in the same cake or one of the first shells in my rack. I know for sure I didn't load any shells upside down because I checked MANY times.

This was a lot of fun and many of you all have some good product and displays in what has already been posted. I usually just fire off a few cakes on NYE, but this was a bit more enjoyable (and a bit more work). Big Worm and others, thanks for putting this together.

Here is my e-fired submittal. The video is edited to also be posted on my humble YT channel. It was some what of a game of Tetris to get everything organized on the board, with some of the stuff I had available. You'll see I added some vertical pieces of plywood to minimize any unintended ignition or deflections and there were extra layers of foil over the gas mine. :o

I thought "Electrified" was a good song for the "e-fired" category and tried to add some electrical buzzing noise at the beginning and end. I also thought it would go good with the strobing rising effects and crackle (The green fountains were much shorter duration than listed, the multiple green strobes on the board were a bit pathetic, and the little but fun Whirlwind of the Caribbean Sea ran a bit longer than I had expected , but oh well)

I'm also a fan of firing individual or groups of rows for cakes. Sometimes, I'm running them backwards, from both sides, or even in the middle - sometimes for effect and sometimes for timing. I do something similar by giving them unique names in my script.

They went well with the audio. I'm becoming a bigger fan of crossest. I had an unexpected S76 swap last year. I ended up with a bunch of red crossettes that I didn't expect and used them along with Criss Cross on the 4th. So I had a whole segment that was basically crossettes and strobing rising effects.

I noticed the excitement of the flower pots - made it exciting. :D

Your show videos are not only an inspiration but your willingness to share your knowledge has allowed me to advance far faster then I ever expected. I'm not just talking about the many questions I asked that you answered on the forums, PM's and email. There were many questions I found answers to searching this forum because you asked them long before I came around. This is what inspires me to answer any questions I can or just keep an interesting conversation going.

I know I've said it before but this is the best online community I have been a part of and I have been involved with a good many. I walked away from several hobbies simply because the community turned me off. This one board competition is just one small example. Oh the bickering something like this would cause in other communities. Not here. So I take my hat off and humbly bow along with Rick. I also need to throw out a special thank you to Big Worm for organizing this. I usually don't shoot on NYE because I have another event I attend. That was cancelled due to Covid so this gave me something else to look forward to.

Wow...glad you enjoyed the show and appreciated the choreography. It was a happy accident I stumbled across this version of auld lang syne. I ended up listing to a lot of his music since as well.

I really wanted to do a more somber show to reflect upon the past year. The opening bell tolls were meant to be in memory of those we lost (though I didn't note it in the video as I had intended, the show was dedicated to my aunt and all of those who passed this year from COVID). I think the song lyrics speak for themselves in the context of the past year but basically lets not forget our friends and acquaintances that may have been lost or have not been part of our social circle this past year. We will all have a drink together soon. The bells at the end were to celebrate and ring in what is hoped to be a better new year.

The best part of this was it was just a lot of fun and we were able to put this together simply because, as Rick stated, we have a mutual love for the hobby. I also think its great that we just did it on a whim. Great idea and thanks for putting it together Big Worm. I think I'm going to have to squirrel some additional good product away, if we do this again. I was really impressed with the product you were all able to put together. Thanks everyone.

I've been thinking about adding some product to my 4th order for next time as well. However I hope I won't be shooting next NYE because my regularly scheduled event won't be cancelled like it was this year. We'll see.....maybe I can shot my show early rather than on NYE.

Most all of the product I used was stuff I had on hand either for next 4th or was freebies or sale items I just hadn't got around to shooting. The one Phantom cake I bought just because I had a small balance on a gift cert and a 75% off coupon. Figured it was good time to use that balance. The cake cost me a couple bucks out of pocket. The canister shells my son picked up last 4th to add to my show but I had no racks or time to rework the script.

What was nice about this contest is that being one 2x4 board it opened it up to just about anyone because it wasn't a big investment to compete.

Swag bag received. I love all of it! My kids have claimed the cups, my wife the shirt. Me, I'm in love with the catalog and stickers. Big shout out to WFBOOM and Big Worm for this. This was a lot of fun and something I hope we all can do again!
