View Full Version : 12" vs. 15" 1.91 ID HDPE plugged mortars

I wanted to get people's thoughts on this subject. Some say that a 15" HDPE mortar will give you extra height out of your shells compared to the 12" HDPE mortar, but you may run into some problems. The fuse may be too short in which case you will have to add a small piece of visco fuse to extend the fuse that is already attached to your shell.

Is there any "hard" evidence or proof that the 15" HDPE mortar adds extra height / lift or is this simply speculation?

if there is I haven't seen it. I shoot both lengths and to be honest it gets annoying adding a piece of leader to each shell in the 15 inch ones. I used both in my finale this year and when I look back at the video they all break pretty relative to each other with no discernable difference. so I say no, they don't. just my .02

its all chemistry.....i only use 12 inch..its less of a headache...

I shoot with alot of guys with alot of experience and have seen nothing but 12" for 1.4.

really no need to waste money on the 15" tubes.... Like PAL said, it all depends on the chemistry on how high a shell with go

Does anyone have video of shells being shot out of 12" and 15" at the same time? If the 15" mortar propels the artillery shell higher in the air, the artillery shell shot from the 12" mortar should explode first followed by artillery shell shot out of the 15" mortar.

or does anyone have video of 12" mortar being shot followed by 15" with something in the background as a reference point? (i.e.--tree, skyline, etc) which would prove if the 15" go higher than the 12"?

I am trying to wrap my feeble mind around the science as to how (or if?) the 15" will shoot higher?

Liam a 15 inch tube has a larger gas build up then a 12 inch tube. It will go higher. you will not see the differance standing underneath the shells you probably could standing a few hundred feet away. the longer the tube the more gass build up. hope this helps.

Don't waste your money on 15" mortars. Been there, done that.

back on 6-26-011 we talked about this the thread as called Mortar Tubes check it out the 2nd post explained between 12s and 15s. this might heip.

I shoot 1.4 i have 80 15in fiberglass tubes, 15 12 hdpe tubes and 218 hdpe 15 in tubes. if the shells have a short fuse i use my 12 tubes. most of my shells i shoot from the kits have a 15 to 11 in tubes. now it is not really 15in in side, you have 1in plug in side or a 1in half. so your tube would be 14 to 13 in in side, now the same with 12in tubes would be 10 or 11in in side. now for holes in the tubes no i do not do that at all. back when i started making my racks 05/06 some said 15in would make it go higher ????? well on some. then most good shells come with the a tube with in side length of 11in or 13in hope this helps you out? this it

No your not wrong....a snug shell in a 15 inch tube will go higher then a snug shell in a 12 inch.

But in reality what Pal just said today in post 8 pretty much sums it up without calling in the scientists.

Don't waste your money and time with 15"....the only difference you'll notice is in the bank

this is true when i make some more racks i will use 12in theay are cheaper, back when i started i did both so i learned back thean about it.

I always assumed 15" was for multi break shells just because the kits with multibreaks seem to have longer tubes with them.

well yes and no rember not all kits will. the tube my be 15in but the plug in side my be 1in or 11/2 in side. that would shorted it. get a ruler and check.

A certain seller I know tested these and he found no visible difference.
