View Full Version : Instant fire consumer mortar racks

More nub questions....I've seen videos of guys using initiators to fire individual mortars in consumer mortar racks for instant fire. This seems like overkill to me if doing it for nothing more than sky puke. There has to be a better way that maybe isn't quite as accurate but is good enough? I was thinking if you ran quick fuse down the entire length of the shells visco that would probably work.

Thoughts?

Exactly how I do it. If you want to give a slightly longer duration, snake the fuse from one row to the next. If you really want them all up about the same time, run the fuse in parallel on the rows.

Take a look at how we do our salutes. It would work with shells also. Im done with wooden racks as the milk crate allows for the fuses to be closer together as well as a smaller, lighter and more easily store-able rack solution. Check it out. We then take the bundles of fuse that you see there and attach them to a quick fuse that gets attached to the trunks of visco.

That's exactly how I do it as well. I snake quickfuse between all the mortars and I daisy chain the crates together. This year I had 3 sets of 4 crates (300 mortars total) and they all went up in about 7 seconds. Didn't have a single mortar not fire.

4281I had about 75 shells in my show that were poked including a 50 rack of loud ones that I sent 5 at a time in .20 intervals. The wired rack is the one in the middle. The other 2 racks didn?t make it into the show

I rarely use shells anymore. Just a pain to mess with and they don’t offer effects that you can get in cakes. However, when I do use shells it’s for filler. So I do poke my shells. If I was going to use the shells for a finale I would fuse them like the guys above.

Funny story, I was going to do some shell demos for my little YouTube channel. I had 12 wired up. I sat down and was waiting for it do get dark. When dark came I grab my remote turned it on and almost dropped it. Accidentally pushed the fire all button in attempt to not drop the remote. It was pretty and loud lol.

I'm curious from looking at the photo. Are you wiring the groups of 5 in parallel at the module?
I bet that was a nice looking (and sounding) 2 seconds lol!

Yes, they were all in parallel at the module. The white and blue wires are not mjg’s rather just scab extensions for my Uber short ematch leads. If you zoom way in you can see the orange inside the tubes.

Lot of work for a really short burst of fun...but well worth it! It indeed was a very good sounding punctuation mark to the finale.

Thanks man I appreciate the kind words. Im just getting my feet wet in the video end of things so this one is a little rough. Either way, I am glad you enjoyed!

I'm doing a small show for my daughter's birthday on the 20th. This rack is 40 shells poked and quick fused. They're connected to quick fuse with 3 pieces of quick fuse wrapped together lighting all the ends. I cover them all in foil tape. I'll use an initiator or talon to light one ingnition point with a backup. They usually all go up within a second or so for the very end of the finale. These ones are ball shells with tails. The orange tape is to try and prevent them from jumping.

I probably do more with the tape than I need to, but it's still less painful than setting up a professional show. I don't mind ithttp://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=4287&stc=1http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=4287&stc=1.

I use the consumer quick fuse for near instantaneous ignition of multiple canister shells. I also use various other burn rate fuses to change things up.
Each of my 'racks' are 45 mortars, 5 rows of 9.
The first two racks have straight up shots, the last two racks are fanned into a 40 degree spread.

Rack 1 uses ~6sec/ft for the first 18 shots as singles, transitioning to 2.5sec/ft fuse for the next 18 singles, and 0.2sec/ft fuse for the last 9 singles. (~69 seconds duration for the entire rack)

Rack 2 uses ~6sec/ft fuse for the first 9 shots as singles, transitioning to 18 shots as doubles, and then 2.5sec/ft fuse for 18 shots as doubles. (~38 seconds duration for the entire rack)
http://www.pyrotalk.com/bulletin/attachment.php?attachmentid=4289&stc=1

Rack 3 uses 2.5sec/ft fuse for all 45 shells as singles, fanned out with 40 degree spread. (~50 seconds duration) (This is the rack in the middle of the trailer)
There's another small rack shown on the trailer with Rack 3 with some 1" & 1.75" tubes that I used for ball shells for s&g... used 15sec/ft use on that.

Rack 4 uses 0.2sec/ft fuse for all 45 shells, main fuse across the top row and then down each column, dumping all 45 shells into the air in under ~2 seconds... fanned out at 40 degrees.

Right around 3k between 1.3 and 1.4. Never hesitate to ask me anything bud. That’s what we are here for!

Nice and simple idea having mortars with tails for the finale/sky puke.

Very nice show as always Bazerk!! Nice job putting together that video too. That took quite a bit of editing from what I can tell. Very nice!

Thank you sir! It did indeed. I never thought there was ever going to be a case where there was too much footage, all while not having the shots you really wanted. It happened to me, lol.

Well something tells me you're going to "fill the gaps" so to speak and get all those shot next year!

You know me all to well sir. A lot will change for next year. Had to play it safe this year as I was at a new venue and needed to test the waters.

No lights and sirens I hope? If not, I'd say you're cleared in hot for next year!
