These cans of powder are from my fireworks chemical haul about a year or so ago. If you remember some of the cans were Meal D. This is commercial grade Meal D from Goex. I am open to opinions on how this will perform if I use it on the Thunder Mugs (Concussion Mortars). Better? Worse? or no difference?

Bigger grains burn slowe and create a low boom frequency, the smaller grains much higher pitched. I wouldn't recommend using meal D in cannon, it burns quicker so will have a lot of force, enough it could possibly crack the cannon.

Btw, I have 2 3" steel cannons. I use only 1f or cannon grade powder in them.

I heard this commercially made Meal D is hard to come by. I really do not know. I put some flame to that little bit show in the picture and it went off like flash powder. I'll have to find the opportunity to get some of it into the Thunder Mugs .

You can buy it 50#s at a time from ace pyro.. As for how well it will do in your thunder mug... I don't see it working that well, try it with your bread idea. If you get a good enough plug over the top it may work...

I would think it should work well. Meal D is about the grade that would be used in firecrackers (BP crackers of course). It will burn fast and should produce a loud report. If your mug is built to handle faster mixes you should be ok. I would always build a wooden box to protect yourself and bystanders even with slower mixes. Just extra insurance.

Before the CPSC ban, on a trip down south we purchased 2" salutes (brand name "Joker", red convolute wound, green visco end fuse, crimped ends). When one failed to fire due to the fuse falling out, an 'autopsy' revealed BP, more of a powder than a mesh, finer than what Dave has shown. They gave a very good report, so I would think the meal D would work very well in the mug.

So how does this stuff compare to flash?

So how does this stuff compare to flash?

That is like comparing apples & oranges. You don't want to put flash in a ThunderMug.

Dave, my brother in law has a large cannon with a 30mm bore. He uses 2FA powder in it & it shakes the ground!
The Meal D would burn much faster--probably hotter---but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Try some & see what happens.
On a comparison note---most small 1.3g shells [2 1/2" & 3'] & all your 1.4g shells seem to have 4FA powder in them for the lift charge. When you get into bigger shells you find 2FA. Bigger particles take up more room--.
