For me it was about 30 years ago when I was at a fireworks stand and saw this cake/fountain called "scorpion", cool graphics, about 18 inches in diameter and this
thing had some weight to it. Forked out some 30 clams for this pup and home I went. That night I fired this dude up and got about 18 seconds of lame fizzle.
WTF !!!!-I walked over to inspect this piece of crap and here the outside ring were these little 1/4 inch tubes glued to a big cardboard ring filled with sand and
gravel. I can't remember who made this circular turd but from that point on I became a discriminating consumer, buying recognized name brands, asking for a
open display of the item and later with the net utube vids etc. "Once bitten twice shy" LOL.
What was your biggest let down ?

For me, anything black cat. LOL

More specifically, a long time ago a buddy of mine and I went to a fireworks store and ended up buying this big @ss tube on a base for like $50-$60. Shot it off on 4th of July and it was horrible. Upon further inspection, inside in the bottom was a tiny 200 gram cake glued to the bottom.
It was like putting Toyota Prius engine in a Dodge Viper. LOL

Yea,
I know the ones-size of a small trash can-then you look inside and see a couple of smaller tubes etc. It's like biting into your snack pie you just got at the Quickie Mart and it got a big a$$
air blister in it.

Speaking of Black Cat...years and years ago, I had the 10 shot Willow cake. I was actually surprised how well it performed for a 200g.

Those stupid m1000's. I knew they weren't going to be loud, but I think I can clap louder with 1 hand .

Apollo of the Ozarks aerial salutes. Got them from PyroSonic Devices out of Grand Haven, Michigan. About the size of a single-shot flashing thunder, nice base and tube and you could see what appeared to be an M-80 insert inside. Every one exploded on the ground with a bang louder than a DOT Class C firecracker but nowhere near a Flashing Thunder (had a dozen). I disassembled one and they were charged with a fair amount of BP, and the insert was bogus and glued in place. Pretty wimpy in the early '70's, but I wish I had a dozen now.

I have not seen anyone mention anything about the junk that tends to come in assortments. As a kid, I never cared what was in it but it just looked cool and big. I know now that any kind of cake 200g or smaller will be a joke. I hate to say it but even after shooting all these years and even 1.3 shows with my fire department, I enjoy how much time you can kill and enjoy a cheapo little assortment.(Eventhough they are usually junk)

As one who likes to shoot rockets, I would say my most disappointing purchase would be any of the rockets that were deceptively packaged. They go by many names, Columbia,Lucky Space etc but they all have large heads that hide a small payload inside. Dave did a video on this a few years back.

Cant remember who made them but got a whole case of roman candles that would literally shoot about 1 foot out of the end of the tube and pop on the ground.

For me, if it has black powder in it it ain't never gonna be disappointing.... I grew up split dud fireworks in half stomping on them... then took my sneaks off to smell the smoke! haha

I remember when I was a kid, the biggest baddest firework at our local stand was called the "Super Giant Cone." It stood about a foot tall and did a pretty good long show, with various colors of fire and a big flurry of bright stars and sparks at the end. It was always the last thing I would light. Then one day I happened to look up inside it from the bottom and saw that the actual powder in it was only filling the top two inches or so of the cone. Very disillusioning for an 8 year old!

Phantom Fireworks number 500 round red dahlia single shot tube. Number 200 and 300 tubes shot higher and had better bigger breaks.

I still have mine sitting on a shelf in my shop, no label from a fireworks tent year ago. Looked like a 9 shot 200g tubes and all. Tubes ended up being empty and it just had a fountain in the center.

I had some from Canada like that. And, to top it off, every single shot was red! No other colors.

That really blows, as if 1 kick in the gnads wasn't enough LOL I wonder if shoving a Viagra in there would have helped LOL PBP
