VANCOUVER, Wash. -
Residents of Vancouver, Washington, will no longer be able to shoot off personal fireworks in the city beginning in 2017.

The Columbian newspaper reports that the council unanimously voted Monday to ban personal fireworks sales and use within city limits. The new law will take effect in 2017 since state law requires 365-day notice for any changes to fireworks regulation.

Fireworks advocates say the council should allow some manner of fireworks, or at least hold a public advisory vote.

Others supported the ban, citing concerns about fire damage, property loss and other issues.

City fire officials earlier told the council that property loss from fireworks-related blazes peaked this year at more than $570,000.
