Lost artillery shell experiment

This video is part of a future video I will be making about a lost artillery shell. Did you ever loose an artillery shell? How long does it take the elements to render the shell useless? It may take longer than you think. The plan will be to check one of the shells around March 15, 30 days from now. Depending on the condition of the shell at that time, the next one will be 60 days. When the snow melts I will check to make sure the shells are adequately hidden from view.

In 2010 I did a similar experiment. I believe it was in water 12 days for this.

The accident in Hawaii I covered on the forums, when the confiscated fireworks need to destroyed, they tried to soak them in kerosene only to find it did little to enter the explosive part of the shell. That is why they decided to take the fireworks apart. Unfortunately that lead to the accident. These cardboard vehicles so to speak may stand up to more than we realize.

These video clips will eventually be part of a full video on YouTube. For now I will post the progress in unlisted video clips. The plan is to check the shells at the 30 and 60 day mark. March 15th and April 15, 2015. We are four days from the 30 day mark and the first check. The temperature and weather in Pennsylvania has gone from 10 below zero, snow and of course rain. What will the contents of the shells look like? Will the canister shell survive longer than the ball shell?

The ball shells are identical, the canister shells are different. Which canister shells should be the first to go at the 30 day mark? The Big Pro shell or the Mega Banger Exterminator shell?

I can't wait to see the results. The videos you post and make Dave are really the best. They are unbelievably helpful, knowledgeable and just great to watch. I am planning on getting your DVD package soon, after we get through a couple hurdles here in N.Y., and plan to go for my 54. I have been watching tons of your videos about products and setting up shows. Keep em coming Dave they are truly helping the hobby and industry.

No, the videos are not helpful, I am ruining the fireworks hobby and causing damage to the entire fireworks industry. 20 people have gone through substantial effort to put an end to all these fireworks videos in an effort to prevent further damage to the entire industry. (pause) LOL
I have to apologize to you because the prior paragraph is an inside joke for those that have followed my videos for years. At chriskrc, I appreciate your comment and positive feedback. The positive feedback drives me to continue. If someone did not enjoy watching the videos or learn something from it, it would not be much fun to make them. I made hundreds of pyro videos and feel like I have endless pyro inspiration to make hundreds more. I do not watch much TV and like to keep busy and that helps.
chriskrc, if you get this message in time I will let you pick which of the canister artillery shells I should pull at the 30 day mark.

Dave... excuse my language.... **** anyone who thinks pyrotalk.com or David desafey is making a bad name for ANY classification of fireworks. This place and you sir are an endless wealth of knowledge. You are here training everyone the safety and general safe use of fireworks. You Are Like The Princeton or MIT of Fireworks education. Thank you Dave I would be happy to help with this. I also agree with ras1986 and his little rant. I am blowing smoke or just making myself look good here, but I have been in the fireworks world for a long time and also am a veteran who spent 8 years doing munitions and explosives. I do know quite a bit but I am still learning many new things. So as ras1986 said **** anyone who has a serious problem with what you are doing. Now on the selection how about going with the megabanger. It's a well-known shell and I think many others would like to see how it fairs. Thanks once again for the opportunity to help.

Nice video dave. I got about 15 shells that got soaked on new years night. Sat in a tub of rainwater for a day. Been sitting in my magazine since I built it. I am going to replace the fuse and shoot them off tomorrow. I'll report results. It's a shame that bootleg shell was ruined. How you have some left. I wanna see a video of a dry one!!!! Thanks dave!

We are about 10 days away from the 60 day mark on these last two shells. If you look back at the start of the thread you can see the weather has improved. Instead of opening the shells when the 60 day mark arrives I may place a hole in each shell and insert Visco fuse to see if the will explode. Here is an unlisted video update as the day approaches.

We are at the 60 mark, I pulled the shells. I think instead of taking them apart this time I may insert Visco Fuse into the product. Stating with the lift and then the body of the shell. I will be at Kellners open shoot Thursday maybe I will just light them that night.
