The current world record holder for the largest fireworks display is Dubai, set last New Year's Eve. 479,651 were let off in just six minutes.

“We’ll be letting off more than about 530,000 in the same amount of time,” Mr. Abildsnes told the local paper. “A lot of technology is needed, but we should manage.”

Inspectors from Guinness have approved the fireworks in Søgne as new world record. It became clear late Saturday night.

Inspectors went over every pallet and checked how many of the batteries that were fired. They finally came up to 540,382 fireworks effects, and then the last year's record from Dubai was beaten by a good margin, writes the local newspaper Fædrelandsvennen.

It was during this year Christmas tree lighting on Tangvall that fireworks dealer and initiator Frank Abildsnes were joined by fireworks manufacturer Svea and really hit the big drum.

At six minutes were well over half a million missiles sent up in the air. It corresponds to ten kilograms of gunpowder every second.

The fireworks were made as a large Norwegian flag in red, white and blue. It had the size of a football field, and were drawn up in the sky above Søgne but the official verdict from Guinness did not come before the inspectors had checked it thoroughly.

The record was beaten Saturday, which was set during the New Year celebrations in Dubai last year. Then it was used 479,651 fireworks effects.
