GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — People caught illegally lighting fireworks in Grand Rapids may see smaller fines.

After Michigan overturned a ban on powerful consumer-grade fireworks in 2012, Grand Rapids instituted an ordinance that prohibited their use except for the day before, of and after a national holiday.

The city originally set the fine for violating the ordinance as "up to" $500.

Because that’s the only number the court used, everyone who got caught had to pay 500 bucks unless they challenged the ticket.

Tuesday, the Grand Rapids City Commission will consider new fines: $50 for a first offense, $100 for a second, and $200 for a third.

The city says those fines would be more in line with other ordinance violations.

Most townships here in MI is that way. Never heard of $500/fines before, and thankfully they changed this in GR.
