Consumer rack config.

If consumer shells are sold in 6,12,24 then why are the consumer racks built 5,10,20....it's like hot dogs and buns "it takes a lot of them suckers to come out even". Anyway I just got done making a couple 24 shot faned racks and I think from here on out I'll just start building in multples of six. Dose anyone else build this way?

I've built racks both in multiples of 10 and 12. The benefit of building in 10's is that if your shells come 12 in a box, you can shoot a couple of 'em to get your jollies, and you can still fill the rack when it comes time for your show. :D

I have never understood this concept either... I guess that you could just use to 10 shot racks for 12 shells. However, it would be nice to have 12 shot racks.

I have built racks in 5, 10's and in 3and 4's. my fan racks are 3,5,8's multiples of 5's can be 10,20 30's easyer to store and when you set them up put your side boards up. every one does it different making your own racks.

a 5/10 shot rack is a lot easier to store than a 24 shot or 50 shot rack behemoth...

i've only made mine in 10s....easier for me to count a big wad of 10 shot racks than trying to do quick math in multiples of 12 or more...

i think this is one of the bigger contributors here. typically when you get into rack building, you're not concerned with "i really need 24 cans to fill my exact 24 mortars. you'll have numerous racks and a box full of shells that you've unpacked from several kits and you'll be filling racks with shells without the hassle of trying to have the exact number of shells-to-mortar ratio.

I think another answer here is weight, especially with HDPE. It's a lot easier to carry a 5 shot rack than it is to carry a 24 shot rack. This will be especially true once you get into the bigger guns....good luck carrying a 24 shot rack of 6" HDPE (i know this is not technically a "consumer" rack....just saying)

I make mine modular regardless (at 10 shot a piece) so I can build them on site come shoot time and then tear them down for easier storing after.

Thinking about it some more, I use 1.91" HDPE mortars. In other words, the exterior diameter is just under 2.5 inches. So building a 10 shot rack the length is 2 feet, or 1 foot for a 5 shot rack. If you were building in multiples of 6 the dimensions for racks would be like... 15 inches for a 6 shot rack and so on.

I guess my point is, it's easier for me to measure 10 shot racks. I know this only pertains to 1.91" HDPE tubes since fiberglass or smaller sizes are obviously different.

I like the set up you have in the above picture. That was a good deal for those mortars. I'm curious what you used on the bottom of those racks?

The bottom plate is actually 2x10 only because I'm out of 1/2" plywood, the side plates are 1/2" osb, all the rails are 2x4, and the spacer bars are 2x2. Despite all the bulky wood they are suprisingly lighter and smaller than a 3x10 30 shot. I'll probly fill the bottoms of the boxes with sand on shooting day.

Because most prosumers have tubs of shells. I personally don't buy a case of shells for a specific show. I buy them shoot some save some.
