View Full Version : Single shot mines/comets with consumer 1.75" racks?

Lacking a proper single shot rack for things like AP comets and mines, is there any reason why a standard consumer mortar intended for 1.75" shells couldn't be used? Or is it like choking a shotgun which would change the pattern on a mine, though for a comet it seems like any effect would be subtle, i.e. if a comet touches the mortar tube wall as it rises.

If they fit they will usually work. I have also ounded rebar in the ground and zipped tied them to the rebar, also wooden dowl rod glued into board (that won't tip over) then zipped tied. Threaded rods bolted into plywood again zipped tied. In those cases just make sure they won't tip over and create a hazard.

I don't think they will fit in a 1.75" tube but I have dropped them into 2.5" mortars with no problems. And no, it really doesn't matter if the comet is ricocheting off the walls. There is enough velocity to keep it moving in the right direction. The same with shells that are bouncing all over the place on their way out and then spinning and flipping through the air. We aren't dealing with firearm precision here. If they fit it will work.

I like the idea of zip tying to a dowel rod glued into a board, given that this weekend I'll be using a dock where there's no ground to pound something like rebar. When you think about it the need is fairly modest, just to hold the tube upright for that moment of ignition. Preparing a nice board with dowels will be my goal for the next "event" (Labor Day?). The single shots I have will all fit easily into a consumer mortar tube, so I'll go with that for the 4th.
