In the NYC metro area, we called those salutes "ashcans".

I think the earliest I remember them being referred to as "ashcans" was as a 9 or 10-year-old in the early '80s via a national news segment on TV. Not sure why, but I associated the term with those cigarette ash cans with the top metal tray full of sand outside shopping malls. What is the origin of that being used as slang for silver salutes?
