Sponge is what you have after the manufacturing process-it is made either by the Kroll process using magnesium or the Armstrong process using sodium. The end material is Sponge Titanium. Flake is made by milling. If you have sponge & want to reduce the size, you probably will chew up the lead balls in your ball mill--it is an extremely hard metal. Hope this helps.
