How come there's no thread for this yet!?

It's officially called Fallas de San José, but worldwide it's more commonly referred to as Las Fallas or Fallas de Valencia. It's comparable to the carnival numerous other places in the world, except of course in Valencia it's celebrated with exceptional amounts of fireworks! Every day there are several shows, day and night. During the day typically 'mascletas', and during the night it can be pretty much anything, including mascletas. You can also buy fireworks in the stores and set it off in the city during this festival

This year, it's celebrated from March 14th til March 19th. I know a lot of people that travel through Europe just to see and experience this event. I myself won't be going til next year (2012), but to everyone who's going this year: Have a tonload of fun! :D

Anyone else with experiences to share on this great cultural event?

These "mascletas" are divided in four parts. In the video you can watch very well 1) THE BEGINNING (minute 1:30) 2) THE CORPUS (minute 3:24) 3) THE SO-CALLED "EARTHQUAKE" (minute 7:02) 4) THE AERIAL PART (minute 8:03)

It's the only thing that I say about these!

Very interesting video. We do not have large daytime ground and aerial displays like that here in the USA to enjoy. It would be nice if that tradition would be started here!

Great post. I just love the daytime fireworks that are all noise and smoke. We have to find someone here in United States to start to import some of these.

Has anyone worked with salute chains to mimic this effect. I have lit chains on the ground and things were fairly stable. I'm thinking suspending salute strings from a cable and testing the stability. The lift charge should have no thrust being that its not confined in a mortar. The question would be would the blast force of the shells throw the others. It didn't seem to affect the 2" strings I lit on the ground.

It's not only smoke and noise to the people of valencia, if u listen good u will notice a rythem whats makes these mascletas so special.
BTW here's a link from rtvv(valencian tv channel) where u can watch all the mascletas live every day at 2 pm spanish time.

That is cool to have a fireworks television channel. If I did my calculations correctly, here in United States in Pennsylvania where I live I will have to watch this at 6 AM. I did look earlier today and saw a parade. Thank you for the link

A Pretty Awesome Mascleta Nocturna shot by Gori, and the mascleta at Ayuntamiento( where most of the maslectas are shot in the middle of the city) of 5 march.
I will be in Valencia to witness this festival for 4th time in a row this year, can't wait to be there!

I did a salute wall as part of my finale last July 4th--I used several 8 foot 1" x 3"s spaced across 75 feet of the back of the shoot site. I ran two parallel pieces of nylon rope four feet apart the entire length and taped a piece of plum line nylon twine to each salute in the middle--so they were two feet from each parallel line. The salutes were in the middle of the two parallel ropes--my thought was that the side pressure would not disturb the adjacent salutes. There were 20 salutes spaced about 3 feet apart. I used grey fast visco instead of Quick Match since I did not want them to all go instantaneously but in a fast "machine gun" effect. It worked pretty well, but two of the salutes got blown off of the string--one in the middle & the last one. I don't have any idea why that happened--the line holding them blew apart before the fuses could ignite. These were equivalent to a 2 1/2" ball ground salute shell--quite a bit of "wallop" to them.
Using "out of the box" salutes will work fine--we did it for a shoot last year--like you said the lift charge will give it a little "spin" ---but won't hurt anything...and--for some reason--the 2 1/2" salute shell is about $1.00 cheaper than the same shell designated as a "ground bomb"--without the lift powder in it! Figure that one out!!!

I'll have to try this at one of the upcoming shoots with some finale strings.

Great videos. I have a question: The ground salutes that are hanging on the lines above the ground are wrapped in colored paper with the quick match fuse in the top end. I have seen some of them with a piece of twine to hold them on the cable so they don't drop to the ground when they light & others that simply drop to the ground. They all have a long flattened piece of paper on the bottom end six or eight inches long. I assume this is just for decoration--but is there a traditional significance to them having this "tail" on them? From a distance they look like a fish or a bird hanging on the lines.
Also, does anyone have any additional video of the actual setup of one of these events by the Pyro Crew? That would be very interesting to see.

You had to wait a while for some answers on your questions.
I hadn't seen them before. Hope my info will help you.

About the tails on the crackers (called "truenos")...I've never heard of any special reason for it. Possibly it's due to construction. These truenos are no more than a flimsy cylindrical piece of cardboard (e.g. toilet paper roll) covered with a mere one or two layers of paper to contain the powder inside. So, the tail makes part of an "end plug".

About the twine holding some of the crackers on the cable...this is done with the crackers used in the final part "el terromoto" (the earthquake). Where crackers explode in rapid succession. They may not fall onto the ground, because the explosion of one could make another fly away.

Below are some videos during set-up ("montaje" is the magic word in Spanish for set-up):
