Dear Friend:

* Ammonium Perchlorate ist incompatible with Potassium Nitrate. It is transformed into Ammium Nitrate + Potassium Perchlorate. Ammonium Nitrate with atmospheric moisture transformes mix into a real "soup". So it is hard to find a good First Fire for compositions with Ammonium Perchlorate.
* Never mix it with Magnesium, except that you have coated Magnesium with Potsssium Dichromate before.
* Does not give good flash powder with Black Aluminium.

In spite of producing quite much of smoke, generally Potassium Perchlorate is the better choice.

Annex: WARNING!
for amateurs: amateurs like Possium Chlorate. You may combine Potassium Chlorate with Potassium Perchlorate, but NEVER with Ammonium Perchlorate. Ammonium Chlorate would be formed. When enough produced, spotaneous inflammation will occur.
for professionals: smokeless compositions often are made with Cellulose Nitrate ("Nitrocellulose"). Some professionals like to "pepper it up" by giving Ammonium Perchlorate into. Cellulose Nitrate is an ester of Nitric Acid. Ammonium Perchlorate with moisture reacts like an acid. Acid catalizes the breakdown (hydrolisis) of any ester, including Cellulose Nitrate. Free and quite concentrated Nitric Acid is formed in small amounts. Now hydrolisis is even accelerated. When enough Nitric Acid is formed, spontaneous inflammation will occur.
