Joe, out of curiosity, how long would it take to build that 6" heart shell if one had all the ingredients and stars on hand? These things seem awful time consuming to me.

It is not any longer than assembling any other shell--actually a little less--since you don't have to spend time positioning stars around the sphere, adding pistil, etc.The hemi is filled with rice hulls in each half with a little break in between, so you just fill it, lay the pattern in & close it up. Making the flat patterns is easy--cut a piece of tissue paper, draw the design you want [smiley face, star, heart, spiral, ring, double ring, etc] and use a drop of hot glue to fix the stars to the paper.
A 3 dimensional pattern[such as a cube or atomic rings symbol] is much more difficult because you are now working in an additional plane.
Biggest time consuming thing is pasting the shells. I did a bunch of 5" & 6" on our clubs WASP so they went quick. The shell of shells I did by hand & it took about 15 minutes to paste it.
6" shells are material hogs--it takes a pound of BP rice hulls to fill the6" hemi...but it seems the pattern on a 5" or smaller shell just isn't as nice as a 6" or larger.
Having said all that--complete time to assemble & paste--probably about 45 minutes or less---IF everything is prepped.

Thanks for sharing. That's really cool to see how it's done. Would love to see a video of the shells being fired.

Great pictures Joe thanks for sharing. I love the looks of the black powder in that last photo.
