I was wondering how everybody feels about this subject. Alot of fellow shooters I know like to remove the top cover of paper or plastic from the cake before firing it. Do you think it really has any effect on the performance of each item coming out of the tube ? It seems to me that there is no difference and its time consuming.

That wee bit of paper has no effect on the performance. Maybe easier to clean up the mess, that is about all.

Also cutting it off exposes the internal fusing etc in the event of a light rain.

I like it simply for the easier clean up.

Cutting paper off does nothing more than make less of a mess....and its not time consuming at all. You have to carry the cake to shoot point "x" anyway....why not place it to shoot and rip paper off right there. Done and done....

I also I agree with all of the above statements less mess for me to clean up that night and next morning. it is just me most of the time, except last 3 years some of my neighbors have been helping out with the clean up when the show is over. and my 3 kids, the next morning i do the finishing tuch up just to make everyone happy,it is a businness parking lot, been shooting there last 4 years

i only take the paper off of mine because i shoot over a lake and do not want the trash to end up in the lake. i think it has no difference in performace, dave has a video showing how a 4 inch shell can shoot through a peice of plywood and still has almost the exact same performace, that shows how much power they have!

also for me it helps determine how big the shots are and see where the pattern of fire goes in the cake. also cleanup.
