I do not know if a mass lighting of these lanterns has ever been tried in United States. For me I just do not like the idea of sending these in the sky on fire and not knowing where they will end up.

i think they look 'cool' drifting up into the wild blue yonder at sunset/night but ... they can malfunction and come down early on fire which can of course set brush-fires or buildings ablaze ...

I find it funny that we as Americans only think about the consequences of our actions, or at least thats what we are brainwashed into doing, as opposed to how they think in Thailand based on this event.

They apparently are living in the moment.

We as Americans, only think we do.

Great video find! I was in Chiang Mai back in '73 [VietNam war days :-( ] but not during the Lantern Festival. That is where the sapphires are mined & I bought several blue star sapphires thereto have set into jewelery. Back then Chiang Mai was a very small, relatively undeveloped town. Now it is a bustling metropolis. I was at a festival where they floated all the candles & incense sticks on the water but that was in Korat [Nakhon Ratchasima] which is about 150 miles north of Bankok.

Awesome Joe!

At some point in life I would love to check out festivals like this and other pyro related ones around the world.
