Costa Rica blows up $1 million worth of fireworks all at once

Absent of the usual parade or festival, the Public Security Ministry put on one of the year’s largest fireworks displays Tuesday with the destruction of more than 771,000 confiscated illegal pyrotechnics, the largest controlled detonation in the past five years.

Seized from border crossings, buses and street vendors between November 2012 and March 2013, the illegal explosives were lit off all at once behind barriers at one of the ministry’s training fields. This was the Costa Rican government's largest-ever fireworks destruction mission. The detonated goods have an approximate street value of $1 million.

This is what really happened. Originally, a million dollars worth of contraband was seized and stored. Then government officials, their friends and corrupt police secretly helped themselves to a free stash of goodies. After all this is Costa Rica were talking about here.......
