Do they exist?

More importantly, do you think they should exist?

Please clarify...

You may be talking about cracker bombs. They are salutes that are square shaped wrapped with yarn and hardened (ground salute) from India.

and of course these do not exist in the consumer world....
SQUARE SHELLS = never will happen!

wouldn't there be a possibility of one snagging/wedged when being fired. and how symmetrical would the break be. I think if it aint broke don't fix it, canisters and ball shells are here to stay for a long time. Now how bout a triangular shell?

a triangular one would basicall be a crappy rocket.....and i think you are right about the ball and canister shells will be around for a while.

really. not sure..lol... guess they are wondering if we will every get different shells, but when ya think about it. There won't be I believe. Most other shapes can be dangerous I think.

Squares have many sides. Individually, they contribute to the whole and form a complete shape. Hope this helps anyone still confused

Square (cube) shells do exist, or rather, they have existed. I do not know of any that have ever been produced commercially, but they have been made before by builders. They are fired from square mortars just as you expect they would be. A year or two ago PyroDirect was trying to get cube shell casings in but nothing ever came of it that I know of.

I know of no videos of cube shaped shells, but here is video of cube designs made in ball shells:

This is Dave's video from Kellner's open shoot last year with the awesome rockets..Look at the rocket header at 7:43 it is square! I know it isn't a mortar, but is is still pretty neat.
Still in awe of the spiral & reverse spiral reports that gentleman makes!!!
NightHawkInLight--that was a great clip of the cube breaks. Never saw one before!

Ok I know this is taking it to the next level but has anyone ever heard of cylindrical shells? I understand if you don't know what I mean.

that's done by pasting stars on a square frame, within a round shell, such a frame could be constructed from. balsa wood, proper filling with burst charge is required in order that the shell maintaintains it's integrity...the Japanese would never deviate from a round shell..the shells are still round however....:-)

...I meant cube frame...

copper acetoarsenite

...another way it could be done is using paper form on which to glue the stars...burst charge filling the center and chaff filling the spaces at the periphery..they'll nevr reveal how it was actually done, but a person can replicate the design...in fact I'm very close to figuring out the 'ghost shell' effect...if I do I'll post it...not quite there yet though, gotta watch the videos a million times then draw out the star arrangement...that's how I reverse engineer [on paper] most interesting designs I see...and it's something to do...lol

The whole concept of a square shell is just funny to me. If it was a good idea then we would see them alot more. Just my 2

They did have [according to brock] cube shaped ground salutes marroons...and of course they made them in other shapes,as I've seen here....the maroons of Brock's time were quite different than our salutes...they actually used black powder but the were heavily confined and then wrapped with string and dipped in glue...marron where originally designed to replace Boites..or cannons fire to indicate midday...this process was automatic it was controlled by a sundial/magnifying glass set up...when noon came the magifying glass would direct the sun's rays onto the black match and fire the cannon then later the maroon!
