From time to time fireworks make their way back to their original origins as explosive weapons. This is video from Syria, here we see what appears to be a salute sent into the air with a slingshot. On a side note, it looks like they sell those same junky ass lighters not only in the USA but in Syria also.

That looks pretty dangerous, if the guy holding the sligshot slips or so everyone on that balcony will need medical help.

Using salutes in a war situation “Sounds” like a good idea. If you really analyze it, salutes make more noise than they do damage anything other than what is in the immediate area where it lands. If you are standing within five feet of where it lands, it may scare you but not really damage you. As opposed to a grenade, that throws shrapnel in all directions. A firecracker does more to simulate battle than actually have any real weapon value.

Psychological warfare Dave, giving the opponent the constant feeling of being bombed.

We really never get to see what the salutes actually look like. For all we know they could have been produced locally and are full of buckshot or ground up glass. If that were the case they could cause some damage.

There have also been a few occasions where I have seen rioters fire mortar shells at police. The police usually have riot gear on so they are pretty well protected, definetly looked like it scared the hell out of them though
